When To Use Low-Code And When To Use Pro-Code

Building your application using a Low-Code platform is akin to enjoying the buffet at your local restaurant:  All the food is laid out in front of you and you can just take what you want.  You don’t have to plan the meal, prepare the food or cook anything.  The ‘hard work’, so to speak, is already done.

What happens though if there’s something you want that isn’t available or if you have a food allergy and need something prepared a certain way?  If we relate this back to your application,  these ‘special requests’ can be thought of like Pro-Code.  The question is, which one is right for you?

Deciding Which Approach To Use

It really comes down to what you are wanting to achieve.  For example, are you launching an online shopping portal or do you just need a place for your users to store, display and share project or other data?  A shopping portal is going to be more complex, with more ‘what if’ scenarios and you’ll need to manage the financial transaction part of it.  Project data is more easily defined:  a few meta data fields and a way to store file attachments, plus a calendar or Gantt chart to display the data.  While you may be able to build the shopping portal using a low-code approach, there are pieces of it that will likely require pro-code to make it all work.

The Types Of Projects That Use Low-Code or Pro-Code

In every workplace there are employees that have ideas for improving the processes or work that they do.  Low-code platforms are an excellent way to put the application tools in the hands of the people that best understand the problem.   Arguably, any project can be initiated using a low-code approach to enable rapid development of the visual pieces of the application as well as the business logic, from work flow to basic notifications to security layers, etc.  You may however need to jump into pro-code to add some backend data manipulation or complex processing logic.  Arguably, any project can be delivered using low-code AND pro-code as well.   The two approaches are not exclusive,  both can be used at the same time depending on the needs of the application.
